Gloria in Excelsis Deo!
True education takes many forms, but the essence is the addition of useful, uplifting, or necessary knowledge or skills, or the undoing/letting go of detrimental or limiting beliefs, attitudes, ideologies, or habits. Traditionally, education takes place from person to person (e.g., a classroom with students and teacher). However, education can also occur through self-study, informal forms (e.g., mentor and mentee), or experience (i.e., “on-the-job” training). If we choose to pursue an education, it is wise to be aware of our intention behind such an endeavor. What purpose will the education serve? Will it help us meet our life goals or desired outcomes? Many times, we fall into a particular education because of external social pressure, expectations of our peer group, or unconscious programming (e.g., “My father was a lawyer, so I must become a lawyer.”). In truth, external influences are a limitation, and important decisions regarding education should be made from within.
Be aware that any education will shape who you are. Therefore, to the best of your ability, seek educational sources and environments that have an uplifting effect. Do you feel inspired, positive, and excited when you connect with a particular book, organization, or learning institution? Or do you feel drained, squeezed, or icky? Each set of teachings, teachers, or groups of people (e.g., schools, communities, churches) has a particular “vibe.” You must “vibe with this vibe”—or at least be naturally attracted to it—in order to fit in. Otherwise, there will be a mismatch, and you will create discomfort and unease. This perspective is a subjective assessment of educational opportunities and does not negate more objective assessments, which can also be important in the decision-making process (e.g., will this degree help me accomplish my professional goals?).
